Proper Use - Proper use means that we don’t want our music to appear in films that advocate violence or incitement, pornography and obscenity, racism or hatred towards any group. We do not license music for use in films that encourage discrimination against one person or a group of people based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or national origin. Nor do we consent to the use of material in any way that constitutes a threat, harm, invasion of privacy, defamation or any other offensive content.
Single Use and Five Use Perpetual Licenses
All non-custom licenses in the Sound Trek Audio Library are defined as a perpetual licenses, which dictates how many times a sync can be used with a specific edit of a project. As long as the media project is not changed, the song can be synced alongside it for as long as needed. As for the rights, single-use or five-use, this dictates how many projects or edits the song can be used alongside. In most cases, licenses in the Sound Trek Audio Library are single-use licenses.
Perpetual or termed Licenses
Any sync license issued will have certain restrictions applied to it, specifically relating to the term and the rights. As for the term, music licenses will generally fall into two categories: perpetual or termed. Termed licenses have a specific period of time that a song can be used alongside a media project (i.e. one year, two years, six months, etc.). Perpetual licenses mean, as the name implies, that the song can be used with a certain project indefinitely. It’s important to note that the license only applies to that specific project. If the project is changed in any way a new license must be purchased for the song.
Non Perpetual, Termed License
Most licenses in the Sound Trek Audio Library have a perpetual term applied to them. Custom licenses, or those that are negotiated between the licensor and the licensee, may have a term applied to them in certain cases. In general, terms are applied to licenses that will be nationally broadcast in some format, due to the ongoing nature of the project.
What is “reasonable use”?
“Reasonable use” is a set of guidelines we use to help prevent the abuse of our site’s resources and to ensure that the content is available to all of our subscribers when they want it. The guidelines also help to prevent the theft or unlicensed use of the content.
After downloading 20 songs you will see a message asking you to confirm that you are human and not a robot. (We don’t give robots music.)
After 30 tracks we ask that you come back the next calendar day if you want to download more.
Synchronization License (Sync License)
Sound Trek Audio’s library of songs are built completely on representing musicians and composers for sync licensing. This method of licensing refers to music that is going to be paired with some form of visual media. It has a broad range of uses, including commercials studio films, streaming advertisements, personal films, internal communications, and more.
Mechanical License
A mechanical license is needed for any physical reproduction of an artist’s work. Primarily this refers to the manufacturing of CDs or distribution of music in any tangible form. Artists, aka copyright holders, will have agreements with record labels, distributors, and publishers on the mechanical terms of their music, and are generally paid per-copy.
License
A license is a legal contract that provides the rights to use a piece of music in a specific project. A license is NOT the same as buying a song. A license provides the RIGHTS to use a song in a specific project.
